The Sabra Trail, a very long trail best started early in the day, begins at ez-Zantur (Pharaoh’s Column) and ends at Wadi Sabra. Situated around 7 kilometers to the south of Petra, Wadi Sabra was a major caravan station and settlement along the road leading to Gaza.
This scenic trail takes you through stunning landscapes characterized by unique sandstone rock formations. These rock formations have been shaped by centuries of wind and water erosion, creating intricate patterns and dramatic cliffs. As you hike, you will encounter a variety of desert plants that have adapted to the harsh environment. Among these are the juniper tree and retama, which thrive in arid conditions.
Hikers on the Sabra Trail are advised to take a guide, wear appropriate hiking boots, and bring essential items such as a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, sufficient water, and high-energy snacks. Due to the length and difficulty of the trail, it is advisable for individuals to be in good physical condition; otherwise, they should use camels to reduce physical exertion and experience traditional means of travel.
